Become A Fosterer Of Stray/Homeless Kittens

At Manawatu Alley Cat Trust, we invite compassionate individuals to become fosterers for
stray or homeless kittens. We take in kittens under the age of 12 born in backyards, often having minimal contact with humans. Once socialised and accustomed to human interaction, these kittens give back tenfold in affection and character. Fostering is a rewarding experience that requires space, time, and a caring heart. Some kittens may take hours to adjust, while others may need a few weeks.

Requirements for a Good Kitten Fosterer:

Patience and Compassion: Must be a very patient, kind, and compassionate person
or persons.
Time Commitment: Must have enough time to dedicate to the kittens’ needs, with
availability during morning and evening periods. You can still work full-time and
foster.
Knowledge: Preferably possess knowledge of kittens’ needs for optimal care and
development. If not, a willingness to learn.

Recommended Items for Fostering:

We can give any supplies required, however we recommend:

Food and water bowls
Appropriate food for your cat/kitten
Litter box and cat litter
Slotted scoop
Bed and bedding
Carry cage
Scratching post
Toys (e.g., wiggle wands, feather toys, balls)

Common Question: Can I foster when I have other pets or children?

Families with children and cat-friendly dogs make ideal fosterers, provided they meet the criteria, and children are gentle and supervised around the kittens.
Socialisation with as many people as possible, including visitors, is crucial for the kittens’ development.

Creating a Safe and Stimulating Environment:

Fosterers should create an environment that supports healthy growth and stimulates the playful, curious nature of kittens.
Some fosterers generously support us by covering cost of supplies, while others may need support from Manawatu Alley Cat Trust, which were are more than welcome to provide. We provide all veterinary costs and flea/worm treatments.

Responsibilities of a Kitten Fosterer:

Ensure a clean environment, promptly removing faeces from the litter tray.
Use a large crate in a busy room for initial confinement, gradually expanding their
space as they become comfortable. We provide large flexi-pens from kmart.
Provide an environment conducive to healthy socialisation and development; kittens/cats stay indoors throughout their time in our care.
Preferably foster 2-3 together allowing us to keep litter mates together, promoting positive social behaviours.

Important Note for First-Time Fosterers:

We deeply appreciate the dedication and care that first-time fosterers bring to our kittens.
While we understand that a strong bond can naturally develop during the fostering process, we kindly request that first-time fosterers refrain from adopting their kittens. This initial separation ensures that the fosterer can continue providing invaluable care to more kittens in
need. We assure you, as you gain experience and foster more, the adoption process becomes more manageable.

BECOME A FOSTERER OF AN ABANDONED FRIENDLY CAT

Occasionally we come across an abandoned cat whom has been left to fend for themselves. We first determine if it is a lost cat. If not, we have them vet checked and desexed if needed and try and place them in a new forever home.

These guys are easy to foster as long as any existing animals on the property do not object too much and the new foster kitty settles in okay.
